Greetings once again. I hope all is well.
I have been thinking more and more about goals. I watched a video recently about perfectionism and its abilities to stifle one’s goals and productivity levels.
I agree with this view as I know how taxing it can be to have goals laid out, but the fear of failure or the “need” for it to be perfect cloud my judgement and cripple my efforts.
I want my life to a peaceful one that is well pleasing to God.
A life where I spend my time worrying about the “what ifs” and my failures is far beyond peaceful and is non-productive.
I have decided that I want to give myself more grace and space. Each day is a gift and I want to enjoy my gifts to the fullest.
I do believe that goals are important to have for without a vision, the people perish- I wrote a piece on this a few months back and you can check it out here.
I want the goals that I set for myself to be realistic and specific. I know that as time and things change, these goals may morph into something else and that is okay. The aim is to move forward keeping in mind that even in nature, nothing blooms all year round.
I need rest, we all do. This year has been an unimaginable one and we need time and efforts to recover from it.
With that said, I have listed a few of my goals for the foreseeable future.
I have been taught to set SMART goals, goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.
I could talk more about that later, but for this post, I want my goals to be general…I just need to have a focus in mind. Sometimes, being too specific can become counterproductive, and we all have to start somewhere right?
My Goals
Being kinder to myself
This would include pacing myself and breaking things into chunks so that they are more attainable.
I would also want to show self-love when I did not get everything on my to-do list completed. Things pop up from time to time. However, if I failed to complete my work because of laziness or procrastination, then it is up to me to learn more about my distractions and build an environment that supports rest and productiveness, not one of idleness.
Using my teachers’ virtual hours
Like most things in life, virtual learning has its pros and cons. A con is that with all the technology, I feel distanced from my teachers. I find that I am emailing them more and though this is a good thing, I think it would be more personable to visit my teachers during their virtual office hours. That way, we can put a name to a face and establish rapport.
Becoming more active in my school
This may look different for everyone. For me, I tend to focus only on the academics, but I would like to change that. My school offers great resources and associations and I want to make the most out of them. During the virtual school experience, my school has gone above and beyond in making its students feel welcomed.
I feel that if I should become more involved by either joining a club or attending a virtual session, it will help with my assertiveness and confidence which are important aspects of human life.
Extra Learning
Now that I am learning from home, I realize that if I pace myself, I can have time for extra things like reading more books, learning a new recipe, learning a new language, or spending more time with God. The opportunity and resources are there, and I would like to make the most of it.
Being more grateful
Youtubers April and Justin from AprilJustinTV had a segment in their vlogs where they would each share a highlight of the day. Over the years, I had begun to write a highlight in my journal, and I enjoy doing that. However, I want to be more intentional with it. COVID has reinforced the uncertainty of time and has confirmed the frailty of life. I want to cherish my moments, family and loved ones, and my opportunities more.
I am not sure how I will go about this one, but life is a journey…I do not have to get it right in the present moment nor on the first try. I just have to keep moving forward, showing myself grace and space to grow.
ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE A BEGINNER. NO ONE STARTS OFF BEING EXCELLENT.
