Well first of all, I haven’t written in so long that I do not know how to greet you. Hello? or Good day? Too formal. Um...Good day my lovelies? Too cute…
How about, hello again. It has been a while and I have been up to my ears in work and worry.
There were a lot of things that I had planned for myself this past semester including being more active in my writing, but nothing ever really goes as planned. Forth semester of nursing school was an interesting one to say the least, but by God’s grace I made it, and I am now preparing to take my NCLEX.
Now, let us rewind to the beginning. I thought that I would be taking an OB/Peds lecture and its accompanying clinical as well as a Trends and Management lecture along with the clinical that accompanied this course making that four classes. However, as some of you know, I am an international student, so I had to add on another course; I chose to do Developmental Psychology.
I also worked for my college and at the end of it all, writing among other things were placed on the back burner.
My perfectionist self has looked back and criticized the ways in which I had spent my time and decided that things could have been done better, however, I am learning to be more kind to myself. This semester was not a walk in the park.
I enjoyed my OB/Peds classes and I loved every minute of my time in the hospital. We spent four weeks on the maternity unit and then another four weeks of pediatrics with simulations. My teachers were a joy to learn from and I loved it.
My trends and management courses were more on the challenging side. I am aware that not every nursing program facilitates this course, but it is exactly what it says. We were taught how to manage our time on the unit, investigated the nurses’ scope of practice versus that of the licensed practical nurse (LPN) or certified nursing assistant (CNA), and researched the different nursing bodies including the Board of Nursing and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. We were also expected to write a personal philosophy paper and complete a group capstone project.
The related clinical for this class was spent on an orthopedic unit where we gradually went from helping a nurse with his or her patients while focusing on one patient to managing two patients (we were not completely alone as we could go to our teacher or the nurse for help, nor did we give medications alone).
During the three clinical sections we strengthened our communication skills using SBAR and worked on our assessments.
Developmental Psychology was an online course that aided with my Ob/PEDS class as it dealt with the developmental stages across the lifespan and should prove resourceful as I continue my schooling and career in nursing.
As for my plans after the NCLEX, I hope to continue to get my Bachelor’s in nursing. As an international student, this cannot be done online…thus I hope to work on my perquisites and then enter a RN-BSN program somewhere else.
Well, that it is for now. I felt rusty and somewhat all over the place with this post. I do hope to be more active God’s willing.
Thank you for stopping by and until next time, peace be.
